How to tell if it's COLD outside...

These next couple of days will go down in the weather history chapters for ARCTIC BLAST...A Winter storm named Ion and the serpentine jet stream and wind are causing 40 degree below zero temps in the north half of the country.  We won't be THAT cold, but it's not gonna be balmy here in the Deep South.

So how can you tell if it's COLD  outside without walking out the door??
Try this...

THERMOMETER

Take a look at the porch thermometer.
Easy, old-fashioned way to find out the temperature.
20 looks like a cold number, being not far from the zero...
In fact it's in the "blue" section...
the "your lips are turning blue" section.

But how does it really FEEL out there???

The dog sits in the sun in her fur-lined parka.
Hmmmm, not a help.

VISIBLE BIRD FEET

Count the bird feet.
Two obvious feet and legs =  A balmy day.

Two Feet gripping the metal rim of the feeder = NOT TOO COLD.

The right foot balancing act = COLD

The left foot under the feathers balancing act = VERY COLD

The both feet buried in feathers on a plastic perch = FREEZING.

BIRD ATTITUDE

"Yup, I can swivel on my one foot stuck to the tin.
And my beak is dirty.
And my eye is icing over.
Why don't YOU get out here???"

"I'll fix you with my steely eye and lean on this twig so I won't fall off
when I freeze.  And I'll continue forever to fix you with this steely gaze."
(**guilt** for the metal bird feeder...a little)

Stuck on the rim of the METAL feeder, sticking his neck out for one little seed.
(Another one over-acting to push my guilt button.  He is NOT stuck to the tin.)

The dangerous new craze of 'beak stuffing'.

A bird stuffed on sunflower seeds is not a pretty sight,
and shouldn't be allowed in flight.

CONFLICTING ELECTRONIC MEDIA

The Weather Channel = 8 degrees for Monday night.

The Local News station = 6 degrees for Monday night.

???????????????

YOU MAKE THE CALL...

Bird on a Wire

Close-up Bird on a Wire

Is this guy practicing his high wire act...
Is he posing for a poster...
Or is he   C.O.L.D.???

(What balance, 20 feet off the ground and no net.)

CONGRATULATIONS!

There you are, now you're now an expert at looking out the window
to determine how cold it is outside.
It's not an exact science, but I'd go with the birds who live out there!!
They don't give an exact temperature number, but heck
COLD is COLD!
